W Trek Refugio Paine Grande and Camping Paine Grande
The W Trek Refugio Paine Grande and Camping Paine Grande is the largest and busiest refugio in Torres del Paine. It has a large dining room, bar and mini market. Paine Grande is located on the northern shore of Lake Pehoe and access to here is by catamaran from Pudeto, or a hike from Refugio Grey or from Refugio Cuernos or Domos Frances.

Refugio Paine Grande
Torres del Paine Refugio Paine Grande is located on the northern shore of the Lake Pehoe. From this point one can trek 4hrs west to Refugio Grey, or 4hrs east on to Domos Frances, or 5hrs to Refugio Cuernos. Due to this location, it is also a start point for the trek into the French Valley, which can be done in one day, allowing for around 10hrs total time, or on the way east to Frances or Cuernos.
As mentioned in the main intro on the phot, this refugio is large and busy. It offers a shower and WC unit, large dining area, a bar and a minimarket.
The Refugio Paine Grande offers:
- This is a large and rather commercial, modern hostel.
- Dorm rooms with bunk beds.
- Communal, but segregated shower rooms.
- Dining room area.
- Capacity for 100 people.
- Full board meals option.
- Bar area.
- Simple basic essentials store.
- Made beds with pillows, sheets and duvets or Simple bed + Kit: the staff provide you the sheets and duvet and you set up the bed.
- Towels available to rent.
- Soap and shampoo provided with the All-Inclusive package.
- Limited possibility subject to managers OK to charge cel phones, no wi-fi, but paid-for, controlled-time use of a few fixed computers with internet access.
Torres del Paine Camping Paine Grande
Camping Paine Grande is an area close to the refugio whereby tents are pitched on the ground and ready-to-go for those who have made prepaid reservations in advance. Guests in the tents can enjoy their meals inside the refugio. Tents come with ground mats and sleeping bags.
Catamaran
Paine Grande is a major “hub” along the W Trek trail because it is also where the catamaran arrives from Pudeto and departs from to return to Pudeto, the other side of Pehoe lake. Many people start their W Trek here and trek east, going through the French Valley, or they end here having completed the French Valley. On the other hand, many people come across on the catamaran and just do a full day into the French Valley and back out, returning back across the Lake Pehoe on the catamaran.
