The Punta Arenas Magellan Penguins half day excursion is a great way to fill a morning from Punta Arenas, navigate the Straits of Magellan and get to see wild penguins in their natural habitat. In addition to seeing the Magellan penguins there will also be sea lions and bird life to view. The excursion uses a number of different-sized vessels depending on how many people are booked for the excursion.

An Introduction to Punta Arenas Magellan Penguins Half Day Excursion

This Punta Arenas Magellan Penguins half day excursion is operated out of the centre of Punta Arenas, requiring an early 06:00hrs check-in. The activity involves a 30min road transfer to the embarkation jetty at Laredo Bay. Here you will board a covered zodiac boat for a 45min sea trip to Magdalena Island, whereupon you will disembark and be able to walk on a path around the island (either side of which are nesting penguins) for about 1hr. This colony, consisting of around 15,000 Magellan penguins at its peak, is the largest in South America.

After visiting Santa Magdalena, you will embark onto the boat once again and be taken a short distance to another island called Isla Marta, which is the natural habitat for sealions, sea elephants, imperial cormorants and southern seagulls. This is a sight viewed from the boat.

During the navigation there is also, sometimes, Austral Dolphins that can be seen jumping out of the water.
